Pavement to Peaks: My Trail Running Transformation
From Pavement to Peaks: My Trail Running Transformation with Run Vault
Zoe Stanek
For years, the rhythm of my running life was dictated by the smooth, predictable surface of the road. But recently, something shifted. I felt a pull towards something wilder, something more challenging, something…off-road.
The idea of trail running had always been a distant whisper, a beautiful but intimidating landscape I admired from afar. The thought of navigating uneven terrain, tackling steep climbs, and descending technical trails felt daunting. But the allure of escaping the city, connecting with nature, and pushing my limits in a new way was too strong to ignore.
That's when I decided to take the plunge and sign up for my first trail race. But for this, my road running training alone wasn't going to cut it. I needed guidance, expertise, and a plan to prepare me for the unique demands of trail running.
Enter Run Vault.
Run Vault’s personalised coaching and holistic approach to training really assisted me to perform and feel my best for race day. After an initial consultation, I knew I was in the right hands.
Run Vault developed a customised training plan that gradually introduced me to trail running. We started with shorter runs on less technical trails, focusing on building strength and stability in my ankles and core. As I progressed, we incorporated hill repeats, longer runs on more challenging terrain, and specific drills to improve my agility and descending skills.
But Run Vault's support didn't stop at training.
Head Coach of Run Vault, Jamie Hunter, helped to break down the differences between road and trails and how to adapt my existing knowledge to maximise my performance on the trails. You can watch the full discussion below:
Trails v's Road, Which is Best?
The journey hasn't been easy. There have been moments of doubt, frustration, and plenty of mud-covered falls. But with Run Vault's support, I'm feeling stronger, more confident, and more excited than ever.
Race Day: Community, Scenery, and a New Passion

Race day at the Noosa Ultra Trail was electric! The community vibe was incredible – supportive runners sharing tips and encouragement. It was a welcome change from the road racing scene.
The scenery was breathtaking. Lush rainforests, stunning coastal trails, and panoramic views kept me motivated. I had to stop and soak it all in!
The race was tough, but Run Vault's training and nutrition guidance helped me push through. The support from other runners and the beautiful course kept me going.

Crossing the finish line was amazing. I discovered a new passion! Trail running has opened up a world of adventure, community, and nature. I'm already looking forward to the next race. And the result? Well, for a first trail race 5th female isn’t so bad hey?!
