Your Best Running Year Yet: 10 Tips to Make Running Stick in 2026
Author: Zoe Stanek - IG @zoeisabella
This year I will be running my fourth and fifth marathons, and if there is one thing I have learned, it is this. Running only sticks when you stop treating it like a short term goal.
It is not about being a natural runner or having endless motivation. It is about building smart habits and fostering a healthy relationship with the sport. These ten tips are written to help you make running stick in 2026 and create a sustainable running routine that lasts long term.
1. Lower the bar on hard days
Life happens and some days your planned run will feel impossible. High heat and humidity, an unexpectedly stressful day, or menstrual cycles can all significantly impact energy levels. Learning to lower the bar protects your consistency. Go for a shorter distance, a slower pace, add walk breaks, or even switch to an easy indoor session. Training with self compassion can completely change the way running fits into your life.
2. Have a reason to run beyond fitness
Fitness is a wonderful side effect of running, but it rarely keeps us going when life gets busy. Discover your deeper why. For me, running is about feeling empowered and making meaningful connections. When you tap into these intrinsic benefits, running transforms from a chore into a valued part of your wellbeing.

3. Do not miss twice
Consistency is king, but perfection is impossible. One missed run is perfectly normal. The do not miss twice rule protects your routine without adding pressure or guilt. It reminds you that showing up matters more than chasing perfection.
4. Keep one run each week just for enjoyment
As training progresses it is easy to get caught up in performance metrics. Dedicate one run each week solely to enjoyment. Remove pace pressure, explore a new route, listen to your favourite podcast, or simply soak in the scenery. Enjoyment is one of the strongest predictors of long term running consistency.

5. Get your gait checked once a year
Our bodies are constantly adapting and over time this can subtly alter our running form. A yearly gait analysis can identify these shifts and help you make proactive adjustments to your form or footwear. It is like a preventative health check for your running. Consider booking your annual gait analysis at Run Vault to keep small issues from turning into major setbacks.
"I am a new runner and after the first few months of hurting myself and doing everything wrong I decided to get some help from Run Vault Performance. Jamie and team are incredible. So friendly and helpful and genuinely interested in their customers and running goals. I did my first half marathon under their guidance and did a time I would have never been able to achieve without them. If you are wondering if you need some help to prevent injuries and achieve your goals the answer is probably yes and Run Vault are your guys. Highly recommend." - 'Rod' verified google review
6. Not everyone should run a marathon
The marathon often stands as the pinnacle of running achievement, but it is important to acknowledge a simple truth. Marathon training is not for everyone and that is perfectly okay. The demands of a marathon training block are significant, consuming time, energy and mental bandwidth. Not everybody thrives under that kind of sustained stress. Find a goal that adds to your life rather than one that consumes it. That is how running habits last long term.
7. You do not always need a race goal
For some, the excitement of race day provides motivation. If that is you, lean into it. But you never need a race to be a real runner. Your consistency, enjoyment and routine are what help running stick in the long run.

8. Get guidance when you feel stuck
Every runner, no matter their experience, hits plateaus. Seeking guidance is a strength. Someone has already navigated the problem you are facing. The running community is full of people ready to support and encourage you. Coaching can help you feel confident and supported, especially when you are building running habits that last beyond the initial burst of motivation.
"The goal is not to do the most. It is to keep showing up in a way that fits your life."

9. Build your week around life, not the other way around
The best training plan is one that fits your real life. A sustainable approach means integrating your runs into your family, work and commitments. Flexibility is key. Run Vault coaching specialises in creating personalised plans that help running become something you can stick to long term without sacrificing balance.
10. Cheer someone else on
There is a unique magic in celebrating someone else’s achievement. We can become desensitised to our own distances and progress. Seeing the joy and pride in another runner can reignite your own motivation. Supporting others is one of the most underrated ways to help your running stick consistently. I felt this deeply at the twenty six kilometre for twenty twenty six event run by LSKD, where seeing people succeed at something they had committed to became my own inspiration.

Final thoughts
The goal is not to do the most. It is to keep showing up in a way that fits your life. If you are learning how to run with more consistency, flexibility and self compassion, you will probably resonate with what I share.

Make Running Stick in 2026 campaign
This article is part of our Make Running Stick in 2026 campaign, a series designed to help runners build consistent and sustainable habits. The campaign is brought to life with custom QR code stickers printed by Oz Sticker Printing.
You will spot these stickers across Brisbane in locations where runners walk, train and gather. The idea is simple. You scan the QR code and it brings you straight back to practical guidance created to help running stick long term. We have also placed the stickers in store at Run Vault and inside online orders as a reminder to stay connected to your running goals.
We partnered with OzStickerPrinting, choosing their Art Paper Stickers in high gloss because we wanted something physical that could interrupt the scroll and bring runners back to real world action. Each sticker creates a moment of pause and links directly to this article, offering small and intentional guidance at exactly the right time. Long term running habits are built through small and consistent steps and this campaign is designed to support that.
