If you’ve been around endurance sport for long enough, you’ve probably heard someone say: “Just drink pickle juice, it’ll stop your cramps!”

From marathon runners carrying little shots in their race belts, to ultra runners using it as their secret weapon… pickle juice has become one of the most talked-about cramp “fixes” in the endurance world.

But does it actually work? Let’s unpack the science.

Firstly, why do we cramp?

For a long time, the main belief was that cramps were simply caused by dehydration and losing too much sodium through sweat.

The theory was:

You sweat → you lose sodium → your muscles start cramping.

Which is why many athletes started reaching for electrolytes, salt tablets, and salty foods during long events.

But the reality is… it’s not quite that simple.

Exercise-associated muscle cramps are complex and can be influenced by a number of factors, including:

  • Muscle fatigue
  • The intensity of exercise
  • How well your body is prepared for the demands of the event
  • Training load
  • Pacing
  • Recovery
  • Hydration and electrolyte losses

More often than not, cramps happen when one part of the puzzle isn’t quite keeping up with the demands you’re placing on your body.

So where does pickle juice fit in?

Pickle juice is often thought to work because it contains sodium (and yes, pickle juice can be very salty). A small serve can provide a decent amount of sodium, which is important for fluid balance, nerve signalling, and muscle function.

But here’s where it gets interesting… the way pickle juice appears to help cramps may not actually be because of the sodium.

The pickle juice “reflex”

Research suggests that the strong taste of pickle juice (the combination of salt, vinegar, and acidity) may activate receptors in your mouth and throat.

These signals then communicate with your nervous system and may help alter the nerve signals involved in the muscle cramp.

In simple terms: pickle juice may help tell your nervous system to relax the muscle, rather than fixing the cramp by replacing lost electrolytes.

This may explain why some research has found cramps reduce within minutes of drinking pickle juice; much faster than sodium could realistically be absorbed and change what is happening inside the muscle.

Does pickle juice prevent cramps?

This is where we need to pump the brakes a little. While pickle juice may help some people stop a cramp once it has started, there isn’t strong evidence that drinking pickle juice before exercise will prevent cramps from happening.

If you’re someone who regularly cramps during long runs, races, or hard sessions, the answer probably isn’t hiding at the bottom of a pickle jar.

The better question is: why is your body cramping in the first place?

What actually helps reduce your risk of cramps?

1. Prepare your body for the demands you’re asking of it

One of the biggest contributors to cramping is fatigue. If you’re asking your body to run further, faster, or harder than it’s prepared for, your muscles are more likely to struggle.

Progressive training, strength training, and practising race demands all play a role.

2. Fuel your training

Carbohydrates are your muscles’ preferred fuel source during endurance exercise. When carbohydrate availability is low, fatigue can set in earlier, and when fatigue increases, your risk of things going wrong (including cramps) may increase too.

Practising your race nutrition in training is just as important as practising your pace.

3. Consider your individual sodium needs

Sodium isn’t the “cramp cure” we once thought it was, but it still matters. If you’re a salty sweater, training for long durations, racing in hot conditions, or losing a lot of fluid through sweat, replacing sodium may be important.

Your needs are individual; there is no one-size-fits-all electrolyte recommendation.

4. Respect your pacing

A common theme we see with endurance athletes? The race starts feeling amazing… until suddenly it doesn’t.

Going out too hard early can create a level of fatigue your muscles simply can’t manage later.

Sometimes the best cramp prevention strategy is pacing smarter from the start.

So… should you take pickle juice on race day?

Pickle juice might help stop a cramp once it starts, but it’s not the magic fix we’ve been led to believe. The best way to prevent cramps is building a body that is ready for the demands you’re placing on it.

Fuel well. Train smart. Recover properly.

And if a little pickle juice makes you feel like an ultra-running legend on race day… I won’t judge.

The bottom line

  • Cramps are complex — fatigue, pacing, training load, fuelling and recovery all play a part, not just sodium loss.
  • Pickle juice may help stop a cramp that has already started, likely via a nervous system reflex triggered by the taste, not by replacing electrolytes.
  • There isn’t strong evidence that drinking it beforehand prevents cramps.
  • Your best prevention strategy: train progressively, fuel your sessions, know your individual sodium needs, and pace with respect.
