Altra Vanish Pulse Review: Zero Drop, No Compromise
If you've been running in Altras for a while and wanted something genuinely fast without leaving the zero drop platform, this is the one. The Vanish Pulse is the lightest shoe in the Altra road range at 238 grams, stripped back for tempo days and race day.
Here's the quick version, then the detail below.
You don't have to choose comfort or speed
That's the pitch, and for once it mostly holds up. Racing shoes have tended to make you pick a side. Go minimal and you feel every metre of road through your feet. Go plush and you lose that connection to the ground entirely.
The Vanish Pulse sits in between. Pick one up and the first reaction is usually that something must be missing, because at 238 grams it feels like there's nothing there.
The midsole
Underfoot it runs FAST PCE, a new lightweight performance foam tuned specifically for tempo efforts and race pace. It's stupid poppy off the toe. That's the bit that makes you want to lift the pace rather than settle into it.
Stack height is 22mm, which is the lowest Altra have gone. That number matters more than it looks. At 22mm with zero drop you are close to the road and you feel exactly what you're running on. If you've spent the last few years in tall stack super shoes, the first run in these is a reminder of what ground feel actually means.
The upper
The wide-gauge knit upper breathes well and adds almost no bulk. There's a heel webbing pull tab and a low-profile tongue, and that's about it. Nothing extra, nothing to fail.
It's still an Altra, so the FootShape toe box is there. Your foot can move and splay naturally even when you're pushing pace, which is the whole reason a lot of runners come to Altra in the first place.

Who it's for
This one's for you if you're already comfortable in low stack or zero drop and you want something quick for the sessions that matter. It suits runners who like knowing exactly what their feet are doing, and who want a shoe that responds rather than one that does the work for them.
Being straight with you though, it isn't a first zero drop shoe. If you've spent your running life in a 10mm drop trainer, going to 0mm and 22mm of stack in a race shoe is a big jump and your calves and Achilles will let you know about it. Build into zero drop through easy runs in something more forgiving first.
It's also not a daily trainer. Save it for tempo and race day, rotate something with more underfoot for your easy miles, and it'll last you a lot longer. And if you need stability or structure, this is neutral with very little guidance, so come and see us and we'll find you something better suited.
If you're not sure whether zero drop suits your stride, don't guess at it. Book a free gait analysis and we'll look at how you actually run first.
